Compression strength and file size
High Quality preserves more detail; Strong and Smallest File trade more detail for size. The same strength does not imply the same final KB for different images.

A mixed batch keeps every file in its original format: JPEG stays JPEG, PNG stays PNG, and static WebP stays WebP.
Need an exact KB or MB size?
Compression strength cannot guarantee a byte limit. Use Reduce Image Size in KB for a measured size target.

Which formats are supported?

Does PicRecast change the image format?
No. This tool keeps the source format. Use Image Converter if you need another format.
Does image compression reduce quality?
JPEG and default WebP are lossy; Smart PNG can change colors. A PNG lossless fallback is used when it wins by actual bytes.
What does Balanced mean?
Balanced maps to JPEG q80, a 128-color PNG budget, and WebP q80. It is a quality/size tradeoff, not a byte target.
Does Balanced mean a specific KB size?
No. Final KB depends on the image and its original encoding.
How do I compress an image to 100KB?
Use the dedicated Reduce Image Size in KB tool or the 100KB page.
Will dimensions change?
No, unless you switch off Keep original dimensions and choose a lower longest-edge limit.
Why did my image not get smaller?
It may already be efficiently encoded. The result is marked No savings and its actual bytes remain visible.
How is PNG compressed?
Adaptive Smart color reduction is compared with OxiPNG lossless optimization; the smaller actual result is used.
Is JPEG compression lossless?
No. Re-encoding a JPEG with MozJPEG can alter pixels, even at high quality.
Can WebP be lossless?
Yes, on the specialist WebP Compressor page. The generic tool defaults to lossy WebP.
