JPEG quality vs file size
Lower quality usually produces a smaller file, but JPEG is lossy and may soften detail or add artifacts. Quality 100 is still a JPEG re-encode, not lossless compression. Check the preview at the size you need.
JPG and JPEG are the same image format
The .jpg and .jpeg extensions both identify JPEG images. This tool accepts either extension and outputs a JPEG file; you do not need a separate JPG-to-JPEG conversion.
Check the actual file size
Actual encoded bytes determine the result. Target size and Reduce by search MozJPEG outputs at different quality levels; if permitted, dimensions may also be reduced. A target is not guaranteed. An already optimized JPEG may grow; the result labels this honestly.

Balanced starts at MozJPEG quality 80. Compare the preview and actual bytes; quality 100 is still lossy.
What is a progressive JPEG?
It can display in stages while loading. Turn it off for baseline JPEG if older software requires it.
What is 4:2:0 vs 4:4:4?
4:2:0 stores less color detail and often saves bytes; 4:4:4 keeps more color detail. Both are lossy JPEG choices.
Can I compress JPEG to a target file size?
Yes. The tool tests actual MozJPEG outputs and reports whether the target was reached. Resizing is disabled unless you explicitly allow it.
Can JPEG compression be lossless?
Coefficient-level lossless optimization is possible in principle, but this workspace does not offer it. MozJPEG quality 100 still re-encodes pixels and is not lossless.
Will compression change image dimensions?
Original visual dimensions are kept unless you explicitly resize, or allow resizing to reach a target. Applying EXIF orientation can swap encoded width and height compared with raw metadata.
Why can a compressed JPEG sometimes be larger?
The source may already be highly optimized, or the selected quality may add more bytes. PicRecast shows the actual output size and does not call a larger file a saving.
Will EXIF or ICC metadata remain?
No preservation guarantee. MozJPEG re-encoding removes or does not guarantee EXIF, ICC, XMP, camera details, or other metadata; orientation is applied to visible pixels.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Your image bytes stay in this browser and are not sent to PicRecast or an external image-processing service.
