How to compress WebP

  1. Choose one validated static WebP.
  2. Set quality from 10 to 100 based on the size/detail tradeoff.
  3. Compress locally and compare the real output bytes before downloading.

Static WebP with Alpha

The output remains WebP and keeps its Alpha channel. Animated WebP is rejected rather than silently flattened.

Browser encoder differences

Native WebP encoders can differ between browsers. Quality is lossy and no exact byte target or strict lossless mode is claimed.

Metadata limitations

Visual dimensions and transparency are preserved, but EXIF, ICC, XMP, and other metadata may be removed during re-encoding.

Local browser workflow

Validation, encoding, output verification, preview, and download happen locally without an upload.

WebP compressor FAQ

Is WebP uploaded?

No. The workflow runs locally in the browser.

Is this strict lossless WebP?

No. It uses the browser's quality-controlled WebP encoder and does not claim strict lossless output.

Is Alpha transparency kept?

Yes. Browser verification checks transparent and semi-transparent output pixels.

Can I compress animated WebP?

No. Animated WebP is explicitly rejected before decoding.
