How to compress JPG

  1. Choose one validated JPG or JPEG.
  2. Set JPEG quality from 10 to 100; lower values usually save more space.
  3. Compress locally and inspect the real output size and preview.

A real JPEG quality control

The output remains JPG. JPEG compression is lossy even at quality 100, so repeated encoding can accumulate visible artifacts.

Photos and already compressed files

Photographs often compress well, but an already optimized JPEG can stay the same size or grow. PicRecast reports that honestly.

Pixels and metadata

Visual dimensions and EXIF orientation are normalized into pixels. Browser re-encoding usually removes EXIF, ICC, camera, and other metadata.

Is my JPG uploaded?

No. Processing runs locally in a Worker or local fallback.

Is quality 100 lossless?

No. JPEG is re-encoded and quality 100 is not lossless.

Will EXIF metadata remain?

Not reliably. Orientation is baked into pixels, but other metadata may be removed.

Why did the file get larger?

The original may already be optimized. PicRecast reports no savings and still labels the valid output accurately.
