How to extend an image background

  1. 1. Choose a supported image and confirm its current ratio.
  2. 2. Select a target ratio and use Solid or Blur for the added canvas.

Background extension without cropping

This tool grows the canvas while keeping the complete source centered. It differs from Crop, which removes overflow, and from ordinary resizing, which changes pixel dimensions directly.

When to use Solid

Solid is predictable for product images, presentations, and clean layouts. JPG always uses an opaque background; PNG and WebP can keep transparent added space.

When to use Blur

Blur works well when a portrait or landscape must fit a different frame without plain borders. The enlarged background and clear centered foreground are encoded into the file.

Common and custom ratios

Choose 1:1, 4:5, 3:2, 16:9, 9:16, or a custom ratio from 1 to 100 per side. The canvas only grows; the source is not cropped or stretched.

Input and output formats

Input supports JPG, PNG, and static WebP. Output supports JPG, PNG, and WebP. Animated PNG and WebP are rejected instead of silently flattening a frame.

Quality and file size

JPG and WebP expose a real encoding-quality control; PNG does not. A larger canvas can make the result larger even when quality is reduced.

Color, metadata, and browser limits

Re-encoding can change color profiles and does not promise to retain metadata. Large images use browser memory, and support depends on the browser's decoder and Canvas encoder.

Local browser processing

Validation, orientation, drawing, preview, and encoding stay in the browser. PicRecast does not send the image to an image-processing service.

Does PicRecast upload my image?

No. Solid and Blur processing runs locally in your browser, with no external image-processing request.

What is the difference between Solid and Blur?

Solid fills added space with one color or supported transparency. Blur uses enlarged pixels from the same image and places the clear source on top.

Can the added background be transparent?

Yes for Solid output in PNG or WebP. JPG cannot store transparency, and Blur output is intentionally opaque.

Why can the output file be larger?

The result has more canvas pixels and is re-encoded. PNG encoding or a high JPG/WebP quality setting can therefore use more bytes.

Are animation and metadata preserved?

No. Animated PNG and WebP input is rejected, and re-encoding does not guarantee EXIF, ICC, or camera metadata retention.
