How to resize an image for Instagram

Fill frame crops edges while preserving proportions. Show whole image preserves the photo inside a fixed canvas.
Fit without cropping
Show whole image can fill spare space with blur, white, black, a custom color, or transparency for PNG/WebP.
Upscaling and quality
Keeping native content size avoids unnecessary enlargement inside the canvas. Filling a larger target can soften a small source.

What size should an Instagram post be?
Choose the placement: 1:1, 4:5, 3:4, or landscape for Feed. PicRecast offers corresponding 1080-pixel-wide canvases, not mandatory upload dimensions.
Does Instagram support 3:4 photos?
Yes. Instagram announced native 3:4 photo display in May 2025 for single-photo posts and carousels.
Should I use 4:5 or 3:4?
Use 3:4 to keep a native phone portrait without ratio cropping; choose 4:5 when that framing better fits your design.

How do I fit the whole image without cropping?
Choose Show whole image. PicRecast keeps every edge visible on the selected canvas and fills any spare area.
Can I add a blurred background?
Yes. In Show whole image mode, choose Blur; solid colors and transparency for PNG/WebP are also available.
What size is an Instagram Story?
This tool offers a 1080 × 1920, 9:16 Story canvas.
Are Reels 9:16?
The Reel cover card uses a 1080 × 1920, 9:16 still-image canvas. This tool does not edit video.
How does the profile picture preview work?
It masks the square master as a circle for preview. The downloaded file remains square.
Will PicRecast stretch my image?
No. Fill frame crops proportionally; Show whole image pads proportionally.
Will small images be upscaled?
Native-size mode avoids enlarging content in Show whole image. A full-frame crop that requires upscaling needs your explicit Fill target resolution selection.
Can I resize carousel images?
This page handles one photo at a time. Use the same Feed preset for each image; no multi-image carousel queue is offered here.
Does PicRecast change the file format?
Not by default. Advanced options let you explicitly choose JPG, PNG, or WebP.
Does Instagram recompress images?
It may. PicRecast reports its local export, but cannot control later processing by Instagram.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Image bytes stay in your browser for validation, resizing, and encoding.
