How to convert JPG to PNG

JPG vs PNG
JPG uses lossy compression and suits many photographs. PNG stores pixels losslessly after conversion and is useful for workflows that require PNG, but it cannot recover information already discarded by JPEG compression.
Why JPG to PNG cannot restore transparency
JPG has no alpha channel. Converting it to PNG does not create a transparent background, remove a background, or recover transparency that existed before the image became a JPG; the output remains fully opaque.
Why the PNG may be larger
PNG compression is not optimized for typical photographic noise in the same way as JPEG. A photo converted from JPG to PNG can therefore become substantially larger, and this tool reports the actual change without promising a reduction.
When PNG is useful
PNG is useful when an application explicitly requires PNG, when subsequent lossless pixel edits matter, or when you need broad support for a non-lossy output container. Conversion itself does not improve visual quality.
Limitations
This tool handles one JPG or JPEG at a time. It does not resize, crop, remove backgrounds, improve quality, or restore lost detail. EXIF orientation is baked into pixels, while EXIF, ICC, camera details, and other metadata are not guaranteed to survive browser re-encoding.
Privacy
The selected JPEG and generated PNG stay in your browser. There is no conversion API, Supabase Storage upload, AI request, login requirement, payment flow, or quota call for this tool.
Frequently asked questions
Will converting JPG to PNG make the background transparent?
No. JPEG contains no transparency channel, and this converter does not remove backgrounds. The PNG pixels remain opaque.
Why is my PNG larger than the JPG?
PNG's lossless compression is often less compact for photographic content than JPEG's lossy compression, so a larger output is normal.
Are EXIF and camera metadata preserved?
Not guaranteed. Orientation is deliberately applied to pixels, but EXIF, ICC, camera data, and other metadata may be discarded during browser re-encoding.
Is my JPEG uploaded?
No. Validation, decoding, orientation normalization, and PNG encoding run locally in your browser.
